ELIGIBILITY

For students seeking a full-time degree at an Anchor University:

Asian students interested in pursuing a full-time degree program at one of our Anchor Universities are eligible for the AFLSP Scholarship. Our Anchor Universities currently include: (1) Hitotsubashi University-ICS, (2) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, (3) Kyoto University, (4) Peking University, (5) Waseda University, and (6) Zhejiang University.  As each Anchor University operates its own independent selection process for the AFLSP, interested students should read through the program offerings of their university of choice here and contact the university’s office or program administrator directly to express their interest and/or apply for admission.

For prospective and existing students of our Participating Universities:

Students of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean ethnic origin, or whose country of residence/ citizenship is Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Taiwan, Japan, or Korea are eligible for the AFLSP Scholarship at our Participating Universities, which currently include: (1) Fudan University, (2) Keio University, (3) Kyushu University, (4) Taiwan University, (5) Seoul National University, (6) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (7) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (8) The University of Hong Kong, (9) The University of Tokyo, and (10) Tsinghua University.

Please note that the AFLSP Scholarship only supports Asian students who wish to study abroad in Asia at one of our Anchor or Participating Universities.

For exchange students:

If you are a Japanese student from (1) Keio University, (2) Kyoto University, (3) Kyushu University, (4) The University of Tokyo, or (5) Waseda University, you are eligible for the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship at one of our Anchor or Participating Universities in Greater China and Korea, which currently include (1) Fudan University, (2) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, (3) Taiwan University, (4) Peking University, (5) Seoul National University, (6) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (7) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (8) The University of Hong Kong, (9) Tsinghua University, and (10) Zhejiang University.

AFLSP Scholars are welcome to pursue their choice of an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral degree or exchange program within the restrictions of each partner university.  For details regarding eligibility, please visit our Eligibility and Selection Criteria  page. Each Anchor University operates an independent selection process for the AFLSP in line with BXAI selection criteria.  Shortlisted candidates are then recommended by universities to BXAI for final review and approval.

For prospective students, the PU application number is the reference number you receive from a Participating University when submitting an application.  Please use this number to register on our website.

For existing students of our Participating Universities, please use your student ID number as the PU application number when submitting your application.

The AFLSP Scholarship supports students pursuing either one or two-year programs at our Anchor Universities.  However, we may support existing and/or prospective students of Participating Universities for up to four years for selected program(s), depending on the restrictions set forth by the university.  In this case, students may apply for the AFLSP Scholarship in their third or fourth academic year depending on the unique offerings of their university, which may be viewed here.

Please note that the AFLSP Scholarship offers each student up to US$25,000 per academic year, or a total of US$50,000 per scholar only.  If your degree program covers a period longer than two years, the maximum amount of US$50,000 will be disbursed over the course of your degree program.

Students of Japanese ethnicity or nationality (including those who hold a Japanese passport OR have a Japanese parent or grandparent) AND who are existing students of (1) Keio University, (2) Kyoto University, (3) Kyushu University, (4) The University of Tokyo, or (5) Waseda University are eligible for the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship.  This scholarship supports Japanese students interested in a minimum one-year exchange at one of our Anchor or Participating Universities in Greater China and Korea, namely: (1) Fudan University, (2) Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, (3) Taiwan University, (4) Peking University, (5) Seoul National University, (6) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (7) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (8) The University of Hong Kong, (9) Tsinghua University, and (10) Zhejiang University.

Please note that the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship offers each student up to US$12,500 for a one-year exchange program.

The BXAI Selection Panel will take into consideration each candidate’s depth of engagement, accomplishments, and aspirations in relation to BXAI’s mission, vision, and core values.  Candidates are expected to demonstrate intellectual and academic potential of a high standard, knowledge of global issues, exceptional character, and a commitment to public service.  Interview topics are wide-ranging in nature, with questions designed to assess candidates in light of BXAI’s selection criteria, as detailed here

CONDITIONS AND REQUIRMENTS

The BXAI Summer Program is an important aspect of the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) Scholarship as it offers AFLSP Scholars a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and build community.  All AFLSP Scholars must commit to attending the BXAI Summer Program, and are required to sign a commitment letter upon acceptance of the AFLSP Scholarship that confirms his/her participation at the Summer Program.  Failure to attend will result in disqualification from the AFLSP and repayment (by the student to BXAI) of any scholarship funds he/she has already received.

To remain eligible for the AFLSP Scholarship or AFLSP Exchange Scholarship, scholars must:

 

  • Remain enrolled at the Anchor or Participating University as a full-time student for the duration of their studies under the AFLSP.
  • Disclose to BXAI and the relevant university if they are a recipient of any other scholarship or form of funding offered by a third party. In such an event, BXAI reserves the right to review the scholarship offer on a case-by-case basis.

 

Scholars must also satisfy all of the following requirements upon acceptance of the AFLSP Scholarship:

 

  • Participate in the BXAI Summer Program, a three-week summer camp held in August. Costs related to travel, accommodation, and other necessary expenses are covered by BXAI.
  • Participate in all mandatory programs at the relevant university as stipulated by the AFLSP Scholarship or AFLSP Exchange Scholarship.
  • Complete a report provided by BXAI.

 

Failure to fulfill any of the above conditions and requirements will result in immediate termination of the AFLSP Scholarship or AFLSP Exchange Scholarship.  The scholar will also be required to repay BXAI for any scholarship funds that he/she has already received.

ADMINISTRATION AND DISBURSEMENT

The AFLSP offers each scholar up to US$25,000 per year, or a total of US$50,000 per scholar, which may be used towards:

  • university tuition fees
  • university matriculation and other fees
  • accommodation fees
  • personal living expenses

Please note:

  • BXAI Summer Program costs (for accommodation, food, and round-trip economy class flights) are separately covered by BXAI.
  • AFLSP scholarships are granted on a need-blind basis.

Other than Japanese full-time students at Peking University and Japanese exchange scholarship students, BXAI offers the same amount to all scholars (up to US$25,000 per academic year or a total of US$50,000 per scholar over the course of his/her degree program, which may be used towards university tuition, accommodation costs, and personal living expenses).  Japanese full-time students at Peking University are eligible for up to US$12,500 for one year only, which may be used towards his/her university tuition, accommodation costs, and personal living expenses.  Similarly, Japanese AFLSP Exchange Scholarship awardees are eligible for up to US$12,500 for one year only, which may be used towards his/her university tuition, accommodation costs, and personal living expenses.

Scholarship funds are deposited into the AFLSP Scholar’s designated account in two equal installments per academic year over the course of his/her degree program.  BXAI will transfer scholarship funds to the AFLSP Scholar within 14 business days of receiving the scholar’s (1) proof of enrollment and (2) proof of tuition fee payment.

Scholarship funds are deposited into the AFLSP Exchange Scholar’s designated account in two equal installments over the course of his/her exchange program.  BXAI will transfer scholarship funds to the AFLSP Exchange Scholar within 14 business days of receiving the scholar’s proof of enrollment at the exchange university (one of BXAI’s partner universities in Greater China or Korea).

No.  AFLSP Scholars at Participating Universities are required to complete payment of their university tuition fees before receiving their AFLSP Scholarship funds.  BXAI will transfer scholarship funds within 14 business days of receiving the AFLSP Scholar’s (1) proof of enrollment and (2) proof of tuition fee payment.
