Bai Xian Asia Institute’s Board of Governors comprises business leaders, professionals, and academic, and includes all founding members of the Institute. Terms of Reference have been developed, and regular board meetings are held to ensure good goverance. Three working committees have been formed to support the work of the Board. All committees report directly to the Board of Governors.

Ms. Ronna CHAO

Chief Executive Officer, Bai Xian Asia Institute

Ms. Ronna CHAO is CEO of Novel Investment Partners Limited, Chairperson of Novetex Textiles Limited, and a Director of Novelpark Investments Limited. Her responsibilities in these various capacities cover investment and portfolio management, property redevelopment, and textile manufacturing.

Prior to joining the Novel Group, she began her career in New York first as a Mergers & Acquisitions financial analyst at Goldman Sachs, and then as an associate in the Licensing Department of the lifestyle and apparel company Tommy Hilfiger Corporation.

Ms. Chao is also CEO of Bai Xian Asia Institute (BXAI). Initially funded by the Chao family’s Bai Xian Education Foundation (BXEF), and with the support of five founding members, BXAI was established in 2014 to oversee the development and implementation of the AFLSP. Today, BXAI supports up to 100 scholars each year to study away from their home country or region at one of its 6 partner universities.

In addition, Ms. Chao serves as CEO of Bai Xian Education Foundation (BXEF); Council Member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council; External Advisory Board Member of the Campus Asia Program at Waseda University; Council Member of the Board of Council, UWC ISAK Japan; Member of the Advisory Board of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE), University of Oxford; Special Counsellor of Our Hong Kong Foundation; Member of the Board of Directors of Mother’s Choice; Ordinary Member and Director of the Yeh Family Philanthropy Limited; Board Trustee of Asia Society Hong Kong Center; Advisory Board Member of GoImpact; and Advisory Council Member of the Washington Institute for Business, Government and Society. She was also a Court Member of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2010 to 2016. Ms. Chao is a Standing Committee Member of the 12th Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Hong Kong CPPCC.

Ms. Chao has a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from Brown University, and earned her M.B.A. from Stanford University. She also spent a year as an undergraduate at Keio University in Tokyo.

Mr. MA Yung Kit is Chairman of Lee Heng Diamond Group, a family business in diamond and jewelry.  He is also the co-founder of Cocoon, a coworking platform where entrepreneurs, creative talent, successful leaders and investors meet, collaborate and deliver results together.  He is a native Hong Kong-Chinese, educated in Switzerland and the United States.  Mr. Ma currently serves as a Council Member and Chairman of Institution Advancement and Outreach Committee of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  His public services since 1978 include work with various government commissions and committees, charity and non-governmental organizations.

Mr. CHAO Kee Tung is Chairman of the Board of Novel E&O Industries Limited, as well as Director of Novel Enterprises Limited and Managing Director of Novel Investment Holdings Limited.  He formerly worked in the development of Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Limited and served as the Airlines’ Executive Director.  He was a member of the 9th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee, and is a member of the Standing Committee of the 10th, 11th and 12th CPPCC Shanghai Committee.  He is a Director of the 4th Council of China-Overseas Friendship Association.  He graduated from East China University of Science and Technology and has a M.B.A. from The Lubin School of Business of Pace University.

Mr. Charles Y. K. LEE, GBM, GBS, JP

Mr. Charles Y. K. LEE, GBM, GBS, JP is one of the founders of the solicitors’ firm of Woo, Kwan, Lee & Lo, a major law firm in Hong Kong.  He has previously served as a member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Council of the Open University of Hong Kong, Chairman and advisor of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, Chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society Limited.  Currently, Mr. Lee is Chairperson of Hong Kong – Taiwan Economic and Cultural Co-operation and Promotion Council, Chairman of Audit Profession Reform Advisory Group of Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Pro-Chancellor of the Open University of Hong Kong.  Mr. Lee also participates actively in community service, most notably as Board Member and Campaign Committee Co-Chairman of The Community Chest of Hong Kong.

Professor John LEONG Chi-yan SBS, JP

Professor John LEONG Chi-yan is currently Chairman of Hong Kong Hospital Authority, President Emeritus of the Open University of Hong Kong, Professor Emeritus of the University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Professor in the University’s Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology.  He is an internationally renowned clinician-scientist specializing in spinal and pediatric orthopaedics.  He was President of SICOT (The World Orthopaedic Organization) from 2002 to 2005, the first Chinese to head the organization.  In 2001, he was the first Hong Kong clinician to be elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.  He holds other positions including Chairman of the Consultation Panel of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Community Relations, and is a Member of the Advisory Committee on Corruption, Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Mr. David T. Y. MONG

Mr. David T. Y. Mong is Chairman and Group CEO of Shun Hing Group. He received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1984, and a M.B.A. degree from the Santa Clara University, California in 1991.   The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in 2005 and 2009, respectively.  Mr. Mong joined Shun Hing Electronic Trading Co., Ltd., the sole agent for Panasonic products in Hong Kong and Macau, as Executive Director in 1991.  At present, Mr. Mong is Managing Director of Shun Hing Electronic Trading Co., Ltd. and Chairman and Group CEO of the Group overseeing the operation of all Group companies.  Mr. Mong chairs the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund which has donated over HK$1.2 billion towards projects that benefit arts and culture, education, environmental protection, healthcare and science research, sporting events and charitable and community activities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas.

Mr. Masaaki OGINO

Mr. Masaaki OGINO is the Founder and Chairman of Fenix Group Holdings Ltd.  Established in 1972 in Hong Kong, Fenix Group is an international company whose businesses encompass some of life’s necessities.  Going through struggling periods, the group established SIDEFAME in 1985, a fashion retail subsidiary of the Fenix Group and FENIX LOGISTIC SERVICES in 1994.  The Fenix Group went on to conceive ANTEPRIMA, a Milan-based premium fashion brand as well as CITYSUPER, specializing in gourmet food items and gadgets sourced from around the world.  Today, the fashion and lifestyle retailing business occupies some 630,000 square feet of retail space in strategic locations around the world employing over 3,300 staff.

On a personal level, Mr. OGINO has been Chairman of the Century 21 Club since its establishment in 1992 and is actively involved in promoting business ties and strengthening business relationships between Japan and Hong Kong.  He is also Chairman of NPO Wakyosokai Ltd, which supports Japanese living abroad, especially those pursuing entrepreneurship.

Mr. Shin WATARI

Mr. Shin WATARI serves as Chairman of Cornes Holdings (Overseas) Ltd., Electronic Scientific Engineering Ltd, Quicksilver Connections Ltd (Australia). Mr. Watari was previously President & CEO of Cornes & Co Ltd. and Director of The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and received his M.A. from the Graduate School of Architecture, Washington University. Mr. Watari is also a Trustee of Washington University.

The Board of Governors delegates most of it responsibilities to the Executive Committee, which is chaired by Ms. Ronna CHAO. The Committee formulates the strategic plans to guide the development and operation of the Institute, both academic and non-academic.

Mr. Kazuma YAMAUCHI

Mr. Kazuma YAMAUCHI is the Founder and CEO of KZM & Company, a consulting firm that specializes in the fields of investment, start-ups, IP rights, entertainment, content, and social media.  Prior to establishing KZM, he was an investment professional at the Private Equity group of Apollo Management, a global alternative asset manager with approximately US$160 billion of assets under management.  Prior to joining Apollo, he worked at MBK Partners, an Asian private equity investment fund, and prior to that, he worked in the principal investment team at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo.

Outside of the work, he manages the Hong Kong branch of University of Tokyo’s alumni association, where he leads and coordinates various activities for UTokyo alumni in Hong Kong.  He was a former member of the Jing Forum, a bilateral discussion forum between Peking University and The University of Tokyo.

Mr. Yamauchi received a BA and an MA from the University of Tokyo.

Mr. William WONG

Mr. William WONG is Chief Investment Officer of Novel Investment Partners Limited and Bai Xian Education Foundation.  His responsibilities in these various capacities cover investment and portfolio management and property redevelopment.  Prior to joining the Novel Group, he worked as a private banker at Goldman Sachs and Citibank.  Mr. Wong has a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and International Management from Boston University.

Mrs. Yvette Yeh FUNG

Mrs. Yvette Yeh FUNG is Chair of The Yeh Family Philanthropy, a family foundation whose mission is “building capacity in promising young minds through education and social entrepreneurship.”  The foundation’s strategy is to identify innovative models to address issues in education and social innovation.

As a U.S. trained attorney, Mrs. Fung practiced law in California for several years before returning to Hong Kong and working in her family’s businesses.  She is an Executive Director of Hsin Chong International Holdings Ltd., a family office.  She has a keen interest in education and philanthropy and serves on the boards of Stanford Law School, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong Society for the Deaf and SOW Asia Foundation.  She is a board member of Tai Ping Carpets International Ltd. and has been on boards of other Hong Kong listed companies.  She holds a BA from Stanford University, MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management and JD from Stanford Law School.

In her spare time, Mrs. Fung loves to travel with her family, especially to exotic and far-flung locations with a goal of joining the Travelers’ Century Club.

Ms. Jean SUNG

Jean Sung is Head of The Philanthropy Centre, Asia for J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Prior to joining The Philanthropy Centre, Jean was Head of Global Philanthropy for JPMorgan Chase in Asia Pacific (2006-2013), managing the firm’s corporate giving in 13 Asian countries. In this role, Jean developed programs and services designed to develop livelihood and workforce skills. She implemented these programs with nonprofits and multi-lateral partners. She also developed and initiated country specific needs assessments. This included KPIs, budgets and timelines to respond to social needs with programs and services aligned with the company’s corporate giving strategy and focus in economic development, financial empowerment and workforce development.

As Head of The Philanthropy Centre, Asia for J.P. Morgan Private Bank, Jean works with clients and their families to enhance philanthropic impact nationally, regionally and globally by offering strategic and innovative advice, thought leadership and learning opportunities. The philanthropy advisory assists philanthropists across Asia to develop, articulate and strengthen their giving strategies as well as determine giving vehicles and structures that would be most effective and efficient.

Jean is recognized for her ability to identify social gaps, customize collaborative alliances with multilaterals and cross-sector organizations, and connect like-minded peer groups. She serves as Board Governor of Bai Xian Asia Institute, Executive Committee Member of Outward Bound, and Executive Committee Member of Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children.

She is fluent in English, Mandarin, Shanghainese and Cantonese.

Dr. Angelina YUEN, BBS, JP

Dr. Angelina Yuen is Honorary Professor in Department of Applied Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). She served as PolyU Vice President for eight years until April 2018, overseeing institutional advancement and partnership, and then student and global affairs.

Dr. Yuen is Honorary Visiting Professor of a number of universities in the Chinese mainland, including Peking University, Sichuan University, China Women’s University, Yunnan University, Xiamen University and Central China Normal University. She is also Honorary Professor of Queensland University in Australia.

Dr. Yuen has been member of the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong since 2014, and was appointed Justice of the Peace and awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong government. She also serves as advisor to and board member of a number of government organizations and foundations. In Hong Kong, she serves on the board of Keswick Foundation, Hong Kong Institute for Public Administration and Bai Xian Asia Institute, and is Hon. President of the Hong Kong Social Workers Association. In the Chinese mainland, she is Executive Committee member of the All-China Federation of Women, Advisor to the China Social Work Association and China Association of Social Work Education, Co-Director of the Peking University – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre, and Advisor to Beijing Municipal Government in overseas talent development, among other appointments.

Dr. Yuen has played a key role in the development of the social work profession in the Chinese Mainland and internationally. She was instrumental in developing the first Master in Social Work Programme in the Chinese Mainland in 1980s, co-organized by PolyU and Peking University. She was President of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) from 2008 to 2012, and she continues to be actively engaged in capacity building programmes for social workers in developing countries.

Communication and Development Committee

Mr. Max MA chairs the Communication and Development Committee, which is responsible for formulating the communication strategy related to external media and public relations as well as ongoing fundraising initiatives.

Ms. Angela CHEUNG is a video consultant and corporate trainer who turns work challenges from scary to simple. With over 25 years of experience in the media and creative industries, Angela most recently served as Managing Director of APV, one of Asia’s most established creative agencies, for over 10 years, producing award-winning content for some of the world’s biggest brands. She has also led creative teams at Disney, FremantleMedia, and MTV.

As a coach, writer, video producer, and digital marketing expert, Angela conducts workshops in presenting, video, creativity, management and digital marketing. Her clients include Google, Disney, Prudential, HSBC, EY, Kerry Logistics, Manulife, Alibaba, Garage Society, the Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies Bhutan, Yale-NUS College, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Hong Kong.
